call to worship

i’m a christian. i have a living, vibrant relationship with the creator of everything. it’s an experience beyond a single means of expression; it’s monumental. this morning, however, i was outside in the shade of a massive oak, feeling the breeze when i heard the ancient toll of bells that is the call to worship for sunday morning believers. my first thought was that it’s so bland and impersonal compared to the islamic call to prayer, which is a human voice. urging. pleading. admonishing. inspiring. a mirror of the creator. when i said this to amy, she duly noted that it was pragmatism behind the ritual. the rural nature of the spread of christianity makes the bells a necessary tool - one that reaches the greatest number with the least amount of effort or cost. i love a lot of the ritual in my faith, but i wish that the call to worship that is broadcast to those that believe and desire to know god was more… god.
